Our History
– 2003 – The Creation
In 2003, Bob Adam, owner of South Hadley’s Tower Theaters organized a group of community theater enthusiasts who were intent on performing a shadowcast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For nearly two decades, the group consistently performed either monthly or weekly shows at the Tower Theaters.
– 2018 – A New Image
In 2018, the cast reorganized and introduced changes to the cast leadership. With the reorganization, a new logo was conceived – inspired by the welcome sign for our hometown communities in Massachusetts.
With the new logo, the cast successfully introduced merchandise to our fans. The initial offerings were simple stickers and T-Shirts were added shortly thereafter.
For eleven of the fourteen total shows in 2019, the cast sold out all 70 seats in the quaintly-sized Tower Theaters. Riding on this momentum, The Come Again Players began to seek out opportunities to once again perform away shows at venues outside of their home. Working with several cast member volunteers who were also leaders in the UMass Amherst Science Fiction Society, a show being sponsored by the Science Fiction Society was booked for April 18th, 2020 on the UMass campus.
– 2020 – Isolation
The cast unknowingly performed their final show at the Tower Theaters on March 7th, 2020 just four days before the WHO declared the COVID-19 global pandemic.
As the world adjusted to the new reality, it became apparent that shows must be halted until we knew more. The monthly show to be held on April 4th, 2020 at the Tower Theaters was canceled. The away show sponsored by the UMass Amherst Science Fiction Society to be held on April 18th, 2020 at the UMass Amherst campus was canceled.
Further, in April of 2020, changes to the configuration of the theater required the cast to end their extensive association with South Hadley’s Tower Theaters.
As many folks did, much of the cast managed to keep our connections and worked to maintain our sense of community by getting together online or outdoors for group movie nights, games and discussions while we waited out the unknown.
– 2022 – Decentralization
As the world emerged from the global pandemic, people were eager to once again get together with their friends and do the Time Warp. Starting in May of 2022, The Come Again Players forged new connections with local venues and returned to performing in both Western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Our partnerships and ongoing collaboration with venues have proven to be mutually beneficial, resulting in repeat shows on an annual basis.
– 2023 – A Hint of a Home
Until 2023, the cast managed to sporadically identify suitable locations for rehearsals. Thanks to the generosity of the Jazzercise Amherst Fitness Center in Amherst, MA, the cast secured a location where they could return to hosting regular rehearsals at a consistent location throughout the year. This provided a baseline of stability for the cast which allowed the focus to shift back to outreach with new venues.
– 2024 – Pioneer Valley Shadowcasting Arts, Inc.
In the wake of the Come Again Players’ return to the stage, the leadership determined that the time was right for them to incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In February of 2024, Pioneer Valley Shadowcasting Arts, Inc. was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In March of 2024, the IRS made the determination that our charitable organization is exempt from federal income tax under Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3).
– Present –
The Come Again Players are currently seeking new venues who would like to collaborate with us to put on either single performances or regularly recurring performances of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The cast is looking to book large shows during Pride Season (in the Spring) and during Halloween Season (in the Fall).
We are especially open to local movie theaters who are considering hosting consistent performances and could provide regularly available rehearsal space and storage space as part of an established, ongoing, mutually beneficial agreement.
Please reach out to us with inquiries. We would love to hear from you!
